Web of Lies, Graphic Novel

North Yorkshire Safeguarding Children Board (NYSCB) have launched a Graphic Novel and DVD to address Child Sexual Exploitation known as 'Web of Lies'.

NYSCB workerd with Harrogate’s Safe and Sound group which is made up of young people aged 13 – 17yrs supported by North Yorkshire County Council’s Prevention Service to raise the awareness of Child Sexual Exploitation amongst their peers. The young people worked with a support worker and graphic designer to create ‘Web of Lies’; they story boarded the novel, took photos and digitally enhanced them to depict the story.

“The graphic novel tells the story of Kelly, a 14-year-old girl, who is flattered when an older boy starts to pay attention to her. But the relationship spirals out of control as her boyfriend reveals a dark, controlling side”.

In addition to the graphic novel the group created an interactive DVD which is aimed at 13/14 year old students to explore child sexual exploitation in more detail. The DVD is narrated and led by the young people themselves taking the audience to think, respond and reflect upon what they have read/heard. It is an excellent resource to that enhances people’s awareness of CSE and vulnerabilities.
