Resources to help Children & Families during the Coronavirus Outbreak

Along with partners, we have put a list of helpful resources together which can support children and families during the Coronavirus outbreak. The resources are a mix of information, guides, tips, worksheets, and websites all designed to provide support during this period.

Resources to support Children & Young People

The Go-To have produced a Coronavirus information page. Available from this page are the following resources:

– the Young Minds website providing information on what to do if you’re anxious about Coronavirus
– the Recovery College Online with tips on how to manage worries around the Coronavirus

The World Health Organisation (WHO) has produced a poster giving advice on how to help children cope with stress during the outbreak.

Covibook is an interactive resource designed to reassure children aged 7 and under, designed to help children explain and draw the emotions that they might be experiencing during the outbreak.

The Mental Health Foundation have produced guidance on how to look after your mental health during the Coronavirus outbreak.

Liverpool CAMHS have put together hints, tips and resources on how to support child and adolescent mental health.

Resources to support Parents & Carers

Parent Info (brought to you by CEOP and Parent Zone) is a free service that shares articles, tips, expert advice and resources designed to help parents keep up with what their children are doing on-line.

ICON – Babies Cry, You Can Cope programme supports parents and carers manage normal infant crying and to prevent abusive head trauma injuries to babies caused by shaking, also referred to as ‘shaken baby syndrome’.

Many parents and carers will need to make decisions about whether to leave their child alone for short or longer periods. Here is the best advice from the NSPCC Home Alone Guidance and also NYSCP’s One Minute Guide on Leaving a Child at Home.

Parents and carers are responsible for their children and will need to take decisions about childcare. Some parents and carers may become unwell themselves. It is very important that suitable carers are chosen for your children, if close family members are not available. Please ensure that childminders are suitably trained and DBS checked, as well as private tutors or clubs which may be used.

The National Autistic Society have produced guidance and a helpline for parents, young people and staff.

Place2Be have shared tips and resources on how to support a child and yourself as their parent / carer around anxieties about Coronavirus.

North Yorkshire County Council Children & Families Early Help Service have put together a wealth of ideas to help whilst Children are at home in one handy document.

The Children’s commissioner have also produced a Children’s guide to help with worries and a selection of activities to do whilst at home.

The NSPCC has created an online Hub providing advice and support for parents and carers during the coronavirus outbreak. Content includes: information on keeping children safe from abuse; tips and advice to help parents working from home; and ways to talk to a child who is anxious or worried about coronavirus.

CEOP ThinkUKnow has launched a campaign to help keep children safe online during the coronavirus pandemic.

The #OnlineSafetyAtHome campaign contains home activity packs with 15-minute activities for parents and carers to do with their children using CEOP’s ThinkUKnow educational resources. New activities will be launched fortnightly.

The National Crime Agency (NCA) has warned of a spike in online child sex offending during the coronavirus crisis, with latest figures indicating that there are at least 300,000 people in the UK posing a sexual threat to children.

The NSPCC Learning briefing provides an overview of the main concerns that children and young people have been talking to Childline counsellors about during the coronavirus pandemic (COVID-19). Gaining an insight into these worries can help adults think about what support needs to be put in place for young people at this time.

The NYA has put together a dedicated designed to bring together relevant advice, guidance, support and tools for youth workers during the Coronavirus outbreak.

This course has been produced by Public Health England and is based on international guidance from the World Health Organisation, United Nations and partners.
